"London
Personal Notes... South Australian visitors to Threadneedle House
continue to be few in number, and during the past week the only ones to
sign the visitors' book were Mr F. Palmerston, Mr and Mrs Gerrard, of
Second Valley, Mr R. Powell, and Mr W. Lunn. Amongst the recent
arrivais in London from South Australia is Mr Royden Powell, of Messrs.
Powell & Sons, of Adelaide. Mr Powell travelled to England by
the
Nord Deutscher Lloyd liner Seidlitz, and, landing at Genoa, spent two
months on the Continent, chiefly on business in Germany, where for a
brief space, he had the company of Mr Jack Homburg. Mr Powell expects
to remain in Engand for the next four or five weeks, and will then go
to America. There he expects to spend a couple of months before leaving
for Australia by the Vancouver-Sydney route. He anticipates reaching
Adelaide just after Christmas.(Advertiser

"Views
& Comments. Land Value Taxation. Royden Powell remarks:-It is
pleasing to read the cable message stating that a Minister in the
British Cabinet, the Right Hon. Alexander Ore, advocates the lifting of
all taxation from the labor and industry of man, and the ultimate
laying of all rates and taxes on land values alone. By contrast
Councillor Shannon, of Unley, is reported to have said, 'there was
nothing more iniquitous or unfair than land values assessment.' Now,
any person who give the matter a little thought must see that the
present «ystera of rating forces the house occupier not only to pay hiz
own share of the rates, but also a large share of the rates that should
be paid by the vacant block holder. The revenue raised is spent on
roads, footpaths, kerbing, lighting, etc which adds value to the land,
not to the building. If there be 10 vacant blocks of land in a street
and 10 blocks of equal value with buildings on, as the corporation
improve the road, footpath, and other services the 20 properties will
increase in value; but it will be the land only, that will increase in
value, and the buildings, as a matter of fact, will depreciate as time
goes on. Surely no logical mind could conceive of a more grossly unfair
method of rating than the present, which taxes the improved blocks more
than the unimproved, when the expenditure benefits unimproved blocks
equally with the improved land.(Advertiser

"Keep Your Freedom. To the Editor. Sir—When
the Australian States agreed to federate, the appropriate sphere for a
Federal Government to operate in was decided and embodied in the
Constitution. Since its origin Federal Governments have asked for more
powers at ten different referenda. Both parties have wanted more
power—but nine times the people nave refused, although each time they
have been threatened with dire consequence if they did not give the
Govern ment more power. Finding they could not get from the people more
power for the sake of power, the politicians have decided on a more
subtle approach. Two years ago the bait was rehabilitation of the
returning men and war workers. We were told:—"Without extra power the
Federal Government could not possibly cope with this tremendous task."
Yet, without this extra power, the Prime Minister boasts that "returned
men have been already satisfactorily settled and that unemployment is
the lowest on record." This time the bait Is social services, although
most of those specified are already operating, and in no danger "of
being challenged. Citizens, this is not a party matter. Government
should be controlled by the people, not the people regimented by the
Government as in totalitarian countries. You are told if you don't like
the way the politicians handle your affairs, you can turn them out in
three years. As most of us live in electorates which are "safe" for one
party or another, we have very little influence at a Federal election.
Refuse to give far-reaching powers to the Canberra politicians and
bureaucrats. On all three powers vote No—and retain your liberty. The
more power you give to Canberra, the less freedom for you. I am, Sir,
&c., Royden Powell. 247 Collins street, Melbourne.(Advertiser
