POWELL ------ A genealogy of the POWELL family of London, England, and South Australia & NSW, Australia, from c.1790 to the present and concentrating on my direct line. I make no claim regarding the accuracy of this chart; the original sources are not free from error and a degree of guesswork is involved in genealogy. Last revision: 19/12/2007. (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. The IGI does not have a listing for the marriage of Henry Joseph, however the baptisms of his first three children are listed, along with his own baptism. Henry's wife's surname, Baker, came from the SA Birth's index. The SA Bio gives a dob for Mary of 1834. This is inconsistent with the birth of her first child and also with her age as given in the passenger records for the family when they emigrated to South Australia. Curiously enough, while Mary Powell was baptised shortly after her birth, both George and Charles were baptised on the same day, 9/4/1854, at ages 5 and 2 yo, respectively. The family of George William, brother of Henry Joseph, shows a similar pattern, with the elder children being baptised at the same time, some time after their births. In both cases the baptisms occured within a few years of when each family emigrated. According to the SA Biographical Index, Henry Joseph was from Surrey, England and William George was born in Cardiff, Wales. However, the IGI lists the baptism for William George at Newington, London. It is possible that William was born in Cardiff and the family then moved to London, latter in the year, where he was then baptised (in august), however their parents also married in London, near where William was baptised. The source for the SA Bio's claim of a birth in Cardiff is at this time unknown. The Powell name is generally held to be ultimately of Welsh origin, being a contraction of ap-Howell. However, this does not necessesarily mean that all Powell's share this origin. Powell's in Surrey date back to at least the early half of the 16th century, and probably much earlier. The name is possibly also derived from the Scandanavian Pohl/Poul. There was a sizable migration of Powell's from Wales to Surrey in the early 17th century, making the derivation of the ultimate origin of this line very difficult, if not impossible. Shoreditch lies in the London borough of Hackney and is 1.3 miles due north of the Tower of London, on the Kingsland Road (A10). Southwark is in the borough of Southwark and is about 0.6 miles south of London Bridge, 2 1/4 miles south of Shoreditch. Newington is also in the borough of Southwark, lying between Southwark (the suburb/ district) and Elephant & Castle, along the Clapham Road. Kennington is in the borough of Lambeth, which lies to the immediate west of the borough of Southwark. Kennington is 1.3 miles south-west of Southwark (the district, not the borough), near the interesction of the Peckham (A202) and Clapham (A3) Roads. Clapham is also in the borough of Lambeth, 2 miles further south-west from Kennington along the Clapham Road (A3). Wimbledon is 4 miles south-west of Clapham, in the borough of Merton. Kensington is immediately to the west of Hyde Park, in the borough of Kensington & Chelsea. Rotten Row is in the borough of Westminster and is the street which forms the southern boundary of Hyde Park. In historical times Wimbledon, Kennington, Clapham and Southwark were in the county of Surrey, however they now lie within Greater London. The following chart traces my line of descent from George Powell, with numbering starting at my generation. ************************************************* 5. George Powell,[2,21] born about 1790. In 1845 his occupation was listed as milkman.[21] May possibly be either George, son of Henry and Ann, baptised 25/12/1789, St Margaret Lothbury, London,[16] or George William, son of George and Elizabeth, baptised 15/7/1789, St Stephen Walbrook, London.[17] Both of these parishes are on or near the northern bank of the Thames in the old City of London, opposite Southwark (on the southern bank). In 1845 was probably living at Alfred St, Kennington, London.[21] Married Ann(e) Spink/Spinks, 5/8/1815, St Leonards, Shoreditch, London, England.[6] Anne was baptised 3/2/1793, Saint Saviour, Southwark, London.[18] George and Ann were not listed in the 1881 UK census so both likely died before 1881.[13] Children of George Powell and Ann Spinks:[15] i. William George Powell,[2,4] wheelwright and farmer,[2] born 1818,[20] baptised 9/8/1818 St Mary, Newington, London, England.[2,7] Emigrated to South Australia, 1858, on the "Nugget".[2] Resided Clarendon, SA.[2] Died 16/11/1887 and buried Clarendon, SA.[2,20] Married Caroline Elliott, 24/7/1842, Kensington, London, England.[2] Caroline was born 1822 and died 15/9/1906.[2,19] Children: William George (1845-1921), Mary (1846), Elizabeth (1849), George William (1851-1935), Robert Neptune (1851-1936) of Rotten Row, London, James Thomas (1854-1927),[2] Frederick Charles (c.1855-1858),[9] Henry Joseph Jr. (1857-1912),[2,4] all of Clapham, London,[10] Caroline (1858) of Adelaide, SA, Samuel Charles (1860), Frederick Melanchthon (1861-1920), Arthur William (1864-1946) of Clarendon, SA.[2,3,5] * ii. Henry Joseph Powell, baptised 13/5/1821, St. George The Martyr, Southwark, London, England.[1,2,8,21] [1] South Australia Shipping Lists, ship No.56/12. Extract supplied by Coralie Beer, . [11] Birth is not indexed in the IGI, either for London (which would include Newington) or Surrey (which would include Southwark). Birth was possibly in another parish which has not yet been indexed. [12] George's date of birth and marriage are extrapolated from the births of his children. [13] 1881 British Census & National Index, LDS, 1999. [14] International Genealogical Index, LDS; 1992 edition. [15] Presumably there were more children, however at this stage no further children have been identified. Unfortunately the IGI coverage for South London (ie: that part within historic Surrey) is very poor. The inclusion of George is speculative. Henry Joseph Powell,[1,3-7,16,17,23] labourer,[3,4,16,17] born 1821, Lambeth, London, England,[17] baptised 13/5/1821, St. George The Martyr, Southwark, London, England,[3,4,9] In 1845 Henry lived at Alfred St, Kennington, Lambeth, and listed his occupation as brewer.[27] In 1854 Henry was resident, along with his family, at 14 John St, Kennington, Surrey (now South London).[16] Emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia, departing Southampton, England, 21/5/1856, and arriving at Port Adelaide 20/8/1856 on the "Eliza" with his family.[3,4] Resided Adelaide, SA, from 1856 to about 1881, then spent a year living in Victoria, three years in Tasmania, before moving to NSW around 1885.[17] A nephew of Henry moved to Victoria in the early 1880's, which may account for the year he spent there.[4] At this stage there is no explaination for his time spent in Tasmania, at which point in his life he would have been in his 60's and unlikely to be working as a labourer. Died 14/1/1896, Glebe, Sydney, NSW, Australia.[17] Cause of death was apoplexy.[17] Buried Presbyterian Section, Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, by Rev. W. I.
