COOK ---- A genealogy of the COOK family of Counties Essex and Cambridgeshire, England, and Australia, from c.1715 to c.1930 and concentrating on my direct line. Other related Cook's can be found in t-cook.txt. Reproduction for the purpose of financial gain is prohibited. Redistribution of this material to a genealogical listing/service which resells or charges for access is also prohibited. This material is public domain, unless specified otherwise in the sources, and cannot, by international copyright law ("Intellectual Rights") be copyrighted by a third party. I make no claim regarding the accuracy of this chart; the original sources are not free from error and a degree of guesswork is involved in genealogy. Last revision: 2/1/2003 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Cook is a fairly common name and even in the small part of Cambridgeshire from whence my Cook appeared in the late 1700's and early 1800's there are a large number of apparently unrelated Cook families. This is not surprising given the origin of the name, undoubtedly one originally derived from an occupation, such as Smith and Carter. The coverage in the IGI for eastern Cambridgeshire is is fairly comprehensive (although some parishes are missing), at least as far back as the mid 1600's. Unfortunately, my Cook's arrived in the region in the late 1700's from Essex and Essex parish records are very poorly indexed - Great Yeldham does not appear to be indexed prior to the 1710's. Dullingham, Burroughs Green, West Wickham, Thorney and Great Wilbraham are all parishes in south-eastern Cambridgeshire, a region which is comparatively isolated from other towns and villages in Cambridgeshire and nearby Suffolk. While Newmarket is in Suffolk, it is in a nearby enclave almost entirely surrounded by Cambridgshire. Great Yeldham lies in the north of Essex, near where Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire join. It is 18km south-east of West Wickham, with a road directly linking the two villages. Prospect was an early settlement (in the early 1800's) to the west of Sydney, now part of the Sydney suburban area. A church, St Bartholomew's, was established in 1841, and remained the parish church until the 1880's when the regional centre moved to nearby Blacktown. Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. ************************************************* 8. George Cook, born about 1715, probably in Essex.
